Smart metering piped gas: how prepaid vending changes estate economics

Why centralised LPG with IoT metering and mobile-money vending removes the two problems developers fear most: billing disputes and unrecovered consumption.

Centralised piped gas is an easy sell on safety and convenience. The hesitation almost always comes down to one question from the developer or the management company: who collects the money, and what happens when a unit does not pay?

Prepaid removes the collection risk
With prepaid metering the consumption is paid before it is used. A resident tops up from their phone, the credit lands on their meter, and the valve closes when the credit runs out. There is no arrears ledger, no disconnection visit, and no argument about an estimated bill.

Metering makes losses visible
An unmetered bulk system gives you one number: how much gas the tanker delivered. A metered system gives you consumption per unit, which means unaccounted-for gas becomes a measurable figure rather than a suspicion. On existing installations, the first month of metered data is frequently the first time anyone can see where a system is leaking value.

What the data is worth to operations
Remote reads change maintenance from calendar-based to condition-based. Consumption that climbs while occupancy is flat points to a leak. A meter that stops reporting points to a fault before a resident calls. Refill scheduling moves from a phone call when the gauge looks low to a forecast from actual draw-off.

**Designing for it from the start**
Retrofitting meters is possible but rarely cheap, because meter positions, isolation points and access have to be created after the fact. On new developments we set meter banks, isolation and service routing in the original design, which keeps the per-unit cost down and gives the management company a system they can actually operate.

The short version: metering is not an accessory on a piped gas system. It is the part that makes the system a managed utility rather than a shared pipe.
