Project details
1. Executive Summary & Community Impact
On 30th September 2026, Getgas Energen successfully commissioned and handed over a commercial Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) reticulation system for the Little Sisters of the Poor facility in Kasarani, Nairobi. The Catholic nuns, kitchen staff, and workers jubilated over the switch from traditional firewood cooking to a clean, fast, and reliable LPG infrastructure.
Prior to this installation, the facility relied heavily on biomass, causing persistent complaints regarding indoor air pollution, severe eye irritation, continuous coughing, and heavy soot accumulation across the kitchen. In Kenya, indoor air pollution from indoor biomass cooking is linked to over 23,000 premature deaths annually (Ministry of Health / WHO stats), disproportionately impacting kitchen workers and cooks. The transition to clean LPG eliminates toxic smoke, drastically improves kitchen hygiene, and lowers meal preparation times for the elderly residents.
2. Technical Scope of Works
Storage & Manifold System
(a) Cylinder Storage: 2 units of 50 kg commercial LPG gas cylinders.
(b) Manifold Setup: 3 $\times$ 1 LPG gas manifold system.
(c)Reserve Provision: 1 dedicated reserve bulk gas line installed to allow seamless future tie-in to a bulk LPG storage tank.
Piping Infrastructure & Sub-Surface Protection
(a) Piping Type: Heavy-duty, multi-layer PEX-AL-PEX gas piping routed from the manifold into the central hot kitchen.
(b) Sub-Concrete Sleeving: Complete gas line sleeving below concrete floors.
(c) Multi-Layer Floor Protection: Installed high-visibility gas caution tape over the sleeve, topped with a protective metal mesh sheet layer to safeguard the gas line during concrete placement and tiling.
Pressure Regulation & Kitchen Distribution
(a) Pressure Regulator: High-precision REGO 28 mbar low-pressure regulator installed for stable, flicker-free gas delivery.
(b) Internal Distribution: Kitchen gas distributor manifold featuring heavy-duty brass tees, elbows, and straight male/female unions for reliable, leak-free operation.
Connected Hot Kitchen Appliances
(a) 2 units Low-Pressure (LP) 4-burner commercial cooking ranges
(b) 2 units High-capacity commercial gas boilers
(c) 2 units High-power (2 HP) single-burner ranges
(d) 1 unit Commercial food warmer
3. End-to-End Delivery Lifecycle
Step 1. Professional Installation Design:
Sizing calculations, EPRA/KEBS safety compliance mapping, and thermal load distribution design.
Step 2. Procurement:
Sourcing ISO/KEBS certified PEX-AL-PEX piping, REGO regulation equipment, and commercial burner appliances.
Step 3. Installation & Civil Integration:
Precision sub-floor chasing, sleeving, mesh protection layering, manifold assembly, and appliance docking.
Step 4. Commissioning:
Multi-point pneumatic pressure testing, soap-bubble joint audits, and burner flame balancing.
Step 5.Training & Handover: Thorough operational safety, cylinder changeover procedure, emergency shut-off training, and official project handover to the Catholic nuns and facility managers.
